Q: Will my swimmer have the same teacher for every class?
We believe it is very important for your swimmer to be able to build a relationship with his or her swim instructor and for that reason we do our best to make sure that all of your lessons are taught by the same teacher. In some circumstances, there may need to be a substitute teacher assigned to one of your lessons (ie. if your teacher is sick, or your teacher is out of town, etc). In this case, we will always give you the option to complete your scheduled lesson with the substitute teacher (if available) or to cancel and reschedule your class with your normal teacher.
Q: How many lessons will it take for my child to learn how to swim?
This is probably the most frequently asked question and also the most difficult quesiton to answer because every child learns at his or her own pace. One of the fantastic things about Head Above Water is that we take a tailored approach to ensure that your child gets the most out of his or her classes. The private lesson structure allows for the teacher to customize a lesson plan based around your swimmer's background and previous aquatic experience, learning style, and unique goals. We meet the child where they are and believe in a fun, skill-oriented approach. This ensures that the child builds a positive association with the water at all times while learning as much as they can about water safety and independent swimming. Long story short, your child may learn to swim in one package of lessons, or they may need consistent lessons all season long - it really varies on the child. However long it takes, we commit to FUN and PRODUCTIVE classes!
Q: Do you guarentee that my child will learn how to swim?
Because every child learns differently, we cannot make any guarentees that your child will learn to swim within a specific number of classes. In the nearly 20 years we've been in business, we have had HUGE success in teaching children how to swim, but the length of time it will take each child to become an independent and water-safe swimmer varies from child to child.
Q: What ages do you work with?
We offer our swim lesson serivces to swimmers age 6 months through adult.
Q: What happens if I can't make it to one of my scheduled classes?
All cancellations must be made 24-hours before your scheduled lesson and cancellations must happen through contact with the Head Above Water Office (not your swim instructor). If you are not able to provide 24-hours notice, your swim lesson will be forfeited and no make up lesson can be offered. A maximum of 3 make up lessons can be scheduled during each six or ten class series. Make-up lessons must be scheduled within 365 days from the purchase date of the classes and are not guaranteed with the same teacher. Again, in order to cancel you must contact the Head Above Water; Instructors will not be responsible for relaying any information.
Q: Do my lessons have to happen on consecutive weeks?
No. One of the great things about Head Above Water is our flexible scheduling system. If you are going to be out of town for a week, no problem, we will simply cancel the class that week and reschedule for a future week. If you want to buy an 8-lesson package and use three classes now and use the remaining five classes two months from now, no problem! However you would like to schedule your lessons, we are here to make your life easy and tailor the services around your unique and busy schedule.
Q: What happens if it's raining or cold out?
We do conduct swim lessons in all kinds of weather - clouds, rain and all. Children find it fun to swim in the rain! The only reason we would cancel the lesson is if there is thunder and/or lightening within 30 minutes before or during the lesson. In that case, we would get out of the pool immediately and reschedule the lesson. If you would prefer to cancel your lesson due to weather conditions (or any other circumstance) please contact our office at least 24 hours in advance of your class to cancel and we will be happy to reschedule it for you. Lessons are not eligible to be rescheduled due to chilly weather or rain if the class is canceled with less than 24 hours notice. We recommend you check the weather report the day before your lesson to make sure conditions are suitable for your child.
Q: Can I pick any teacher I want from your instructor list?
We can absolutely take your request for a specific teacher that you would like to swim with. However, we cannot guarentee that we will be be able to schedule you with that teacher. Each teacher works in a differnet part of town and has different availability so we need to take your locaiton and scheduling preferences into account when picking an instructor. With that being said, we believe it's very important to get the correct match between a swimmer and a swim instructor so if you have preferences for the type of teacher you want your swimmer to work with we will be happy to take those preferences into consideration in order to ensure that your swimmer has the most positive experience possible.
Q: Which teacher will my swimmer be matched with?
We take many things into account when matching a swimmer with a swim instructor. First, each of our teachers work in a different part of town (ie. some work on the westside while some work in the San Gabriel Valley, etc.). Next, each of our teachers has different availability (ie. some teachers work weekdays other work weekends, some teachers work in the morning others in the afternoons, etc). Lastly, each of our teachers has different specialties (ie. some teachers are parent-and-me specialists, other teachers are best working with young beginners from age 2-5, while other teachers focus more on intermediate swimmers who need to work on proper strokes). To sum it up, we gather information about you and your swimmer and make a specific determination about which instructor will be best for your swimmer.
Q: What if the teacher who gets assigned to my lessons is not a good fit for my swimmer?
We believe that it is EXTREMELY important to get the correct match between a swimmer and his or her swim instructor. If for any reason the teacher that you get matched with is not the best fit, please call us and we will be more than happy to find a new teacher to work with you for your remaining lessons. Please never hesitate to contact us if there is ever ANYTHING we can do to make your experience better!
Q: What if my swimmer doesn't like it or isn't ready for lessons?
While we never anticipate a child having a poor experience in the pool, there could be many reasons why the swim lessons may not work out for your child this time around. Whatever the reason, if at any point throughout your series of lessons you decide you want to discontinue your classes we can always hold a credit on file for you to resume your lessons at a later time when your child is a little older, or even provide you a refund for your unused lessons if you prefer to get your money back.
